How to Protect Hanauma Bay
Hanauma Bay is one of Hawaii’s most treasured marine ecosystems, home to vibrant coral reefs, Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu), and hundreds of species of tropical fish. As a designated Marine Life Conservation District, preserving its beauty and fragile environment is essential for future generations.
Here’s how you can help protect Hanauma Bay:
1. Use Reef-Safe Sunscreen
Many sunscreens contain harmful chemicals that damage coral reefs. Choose a reef-safe, mineral-based sunscreen (with non-nano zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) to protect your skin without harming marine life.
2. Avoid Touching Coral and Marine Life
Coral reefs are delicate, living structures that take decades to grow. Stepping on, touching, or disturbing them can cause irreversible damage. Always float or swim without making contact with the reef.
3. Respect the Wildlife
Hanauma Bay is a sanctuary for sea turtles, fish, and other marine species. Keep a safe distance and never feed, chase, or touch marine animals. Feeding disrupts their natural diet and behaviors.
4. Don’t Leave Trash Behind
Help keep the bay clean by properly disposing of your waste. Pack out what you bring in—
plastic pollution is one of the biggest threats to marine environments.
5. Avoid Standing on the Reef
If you need to take a break while snorkeling, stay in sandy areas rather than standing on coral. Even a slight touch can damage delicate coral structures.
6. Follow the Rules & Watch the Educational Video
Before entering Hanauma Bay, all visitors must watch a short educational video about conservation efforts and responsible snorkeling. Pay close attention and follow all posted guidelines to minimize your impact.
7. Limit Chemical Pollution
Besides sunscreen, lotions, hair products, and bug sprays can introduce harmful chemicals into the water. Rinse off before entering the bay to reduce pollution.
8. Visit Responsibly
Hanauma Bay is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays to allow the ecosystem time to recover from human activity. Plan your visit accordingly and respect the conservation schedule.
By following these simple but crucial steps, you can help ensure Hanauma Bay remains a thriving and healthy marine sanctuary for generations to come.
